Inspired by The Mummy, our monster movie fantasy casting!

The Mummy hits theatres June 9th and is the first monster movie of Universal’s new Monster Universe. This “shared universe” will include rebooted versions of original monster movies including Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Van Helsing, and the Invisible Man.

Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Service) plays the title monster in The Mummy and from what we’ve seen in trailers we can’t imagine anyone else in the role. Universal has already cast Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein in upcoming remakes… but that still leaves plenty of monsters to be cast. So, we’ve taken the liberty of "fantasy casting" the remaining monsters with actors/actresses we think would be perfect for the roles. Check out our choices below and let us know what you think!

Dracula: Mahershala Ali

Coming off an Oscar-winning performance in Moonlight we think Mahershala Ali would make a great Dracula. Most will probably know him as Remmy from Netflix’s House of Cards or as comic book villain Cottonmouth in Luke Cage.

Ali is able to bring an intensity to roles while still be grounded in reality, which is important when you’re playing an undead monster who sucks blood for sustenance. We also think his intimidating screen presence would help give the Dracula remake a scarier tone.

Wolf Man: Liam Neeson

Standing in at 6”4 Liam Neeson would make for a pretty menacing Wolf Man. The Irish actor has already shared the screen with a pack of blood-thirsty wolves in The Grey and has experience playing the villain as Ra’s Al Ghul in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

He’s a veteran actor with movie roles that range from biographical (Schindler’s List) to fantasy (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) under his belt. He also has the grizzled bravado and an intimidating stature that would allow him to play any monster.

Bride of Frankenstein: Tilda Swinton

In our opinion this one chose itself. Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winning actress and amazing in everything she does.

She’s proved she can play abstract and even other-worldly characters with her work in Doctor Strange as The Ancient One. Swinton so often plays characters with cold demeanors (Michael Clayton) that it’s frankly easy to imagine her as this title monster (meant as a compliment!). Also, her rigid expressiveness and piercing blue eyes would add a elegant creepiness to the role.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon (Gill Man): Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon has a history of playing off-the-wall characters. Usually these characters are extremely brutal in nature as well: General Zod in Man of Steel, Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, and Bobby Andes in Nocturnal Animals (which if you haven’t seen we HIGHLY recommend). So, playing a monster doesn’t seem too far out of his wheel house.

He’s got a singular look and large stature which we think would make him unforgettable as a monster. The Creature from the Black Lagoon (or Gill Man) is also a more abstract role from Universal’s monster universe which is why we think an actor like Shannon, who has proved he can tackle non-traditional roles, would be perfect.

Van Helsing: (TIE!) Tom Hardy/Idris Elba

This was a tough one for us. Since the character of Van Helsing isn’t a monster it’s a little easier to imagine a lot of actors in the role. BUT, we were able to whittle it down to Tom Hardy and Idris Elba. They both have that badass-esque swagger to them while also being extremely seasoned actors.

Hardy has been a juggernaut lately starring in acclaimed movies like The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and who could forget him as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Elba was Krall in Star Trek Beyond and Heimdall in the Marvel’s Superhero universe. Both have the experience and we’d be happy to see either of them take on the role of Van Helsing.

Van Helsing (Female): Evan Rachel Wood

We know, we know… this is 3rd person we’ve cast as Van Helsing, BUT we think it would be cool if an actress played the part. We just think there needs to be more badass female characters in Hollywood these days.

Most of you would know Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores on HBO’s Westworld. You can also check her out in movies like The Ides of March and The Wrestler. If you don’t recognize this young actress - that’s ok, she’s mainly stuck to TV and indie movies. That’s why we think it would be awesome to have her cast in a big budget franchise. Anyone who’s seen one of her films knows she’s got the acting chops to pull this one off, and so do we.
