Let’s face it. Small children’s sensibilities are pretty basic. It’s not their fault –they haven’t experienced enough of the world to have a sophisticated sense of humour or appreciate a complex and nuanced plot. All that is fine and part of the nature of things, but it means that for parents, sitting through a kids’ movie can be excrutiatingly dull.
Thankfully, there are exceptions to this. The best movies made for kids manage to appeal to all ages, or at least, sneak in a joke or reference or two that adults will find funny. We’re here to highlight a few of these gems that are appearing on the big screen as part of our Family Favourites program this spring.
If you’re not familiar with Family Favourites, every Saturday morning at 11am, select Cineplex theatres offer family-friendly features for just 2.99 per ticket, making it a great option to take young ones out to the movies without the risk of a late bedtime. It’s a perfect way to catch up on a recent hit movie, or share an old favourite with the fam.

April 7 - Paddington 2
Amazingly, this film reached 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie review website, a very unusual thing for a kids movie and especially so for a sequel. That alone makes us curious enough to check this out, and if it gets our kids interested in reading the books that provide the source material, that’s just a bonus! While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber's antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it's up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief.
April 14 – Pup Star
April 21 – Pup Star: Better 2Gether
April 28 – Pup Star: World Tour
May 5 – Ferdinand
May 12 – Jumanji
May 19 – Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
We really can’t think of a better two-week double bill than the two Jumanji movies. How cool would it be to see the Robin Williams classic from 1995 back on the big screen, then one week later see how the adventure evolved with the breakout Christmastime hit sequel starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? If you haven’t seen these movies, both center around a mysterious game – Jumanji – that sucks players into its world, forcing them to complete challenges and solve riddles in order to escape. Both films have all the elements for a perfect family movie – adventure, mild thrills, humour, and plenty of heart. No wonder they’ve proven to be popular with families of all ages.

May 26 – Peter Rabbit
June 2 – Early Man
June 9 – Storks
In this fanciful family tale, storks have given up delivering babies in favour of the more profitable package-delivery business. But when a request for a baby brother is accidentally fed into the dormant baby-making factory, a new baby emerges, and it's up to our heroes Junior (Andy Samberg) and Tulip to deliver the adorable bundle to its rightful family. With a healthy mix of adorable cartoon babies and animals, slapstick mishaps, and Samberg's goofy charm, plus a heartwarming message about making time for those you love, this film has something for everyone in your family.
