It’s hard to take Ben Stiller seriously. The successful actor, writer and producer has directed six movies, but Penélope Cruz couldn’t keep a straight face while taking direction from him on the set of Zoolander 2.
“Most of the time, Ben would come out of his trailer dressed as Derek Zoolander. Everyone on set was crying real tears because we were laughing so hard,” says Cruz during a recent Toronto interview.
Fifteen years after the first Zoolander movie, the Spanish superstar plays Valentina, a voluptuous Interpol agent in the sequel to Stiller’s silly satire of the fashion industry. Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Wiig also join the all-star ensemble.
“Ben is really serious when he’s working,” Cruz says. “It’s like he’s not aware that he’s wearing the most ridiculous outfits. I don’t know how he can handle so much pressure; he’s so professional. He has to act, produce and direct every single shot. He was able to direct me and Kristen Wiig while wearing the most ridiculous clothing I’ve ever seen.”
