The top 5 reasons why fans love Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The top 5 reasons why fans love Terminator 2: Judgment Day

It's no surprise that we're big fans of director James Cameron, the man behind some of the biggest movies of all time with Titanic and Avatar! But we're also huge fans of his earlier works, the movies that really established him as a major creative force in Hollywood - The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Aliens.

Which is why we couldn't be more excited that he's remastered Terminator 2 into 3D, and that we're bringing this classic sequel back to the big screen for a limited time! The prospect of seeing Cameron's dystopian, time travel epic in theatres again has us thinking about all the reasons why fans like us love this movie.

Reason 1: Linda Hamilton as a total badass

To prepare for her role as Sarah Connor in the sequel, Linda Hamilton transformed her physique through an intense workout regimen. The soft, feminine Sarah we saw in The Terminator became a muscled, firm, strong woman prepared to do anything to save her son. A fitting transformation for the character, it lends authenticity to the film as we follow Sarah's journey from protected, to protector. Plus, it's just fun to watch petite Hamilton kick butt on the big screen!

Reason 2: Arnold Schwarzenegger as a good guy

We think it's fair to say that The Terminator cemented Schwarzenegger's status as a rising star. Which is why it was such a treat for fans to see him reprise the role, but this time, recast as an agent of good, reprogrammed and sent back in time to save John Connor. It's always fun watching Arnold kick butt, and so satisfying to see him save the day!

Reason 3: The (for its time) state-of-the-art CGI

Ok, ok, we know that by today's standards, the CGI in Terminator 2 is pretty average. But who can forget the thrill of seeing the terminator (Robert Patrick) melt through the prison bars way back in 1991? The "liquid metal" effect was revolutionary for the time - something we've now come to expect from the groundbreaking Cameron, who is accustomed to inventing technology to fit the film's conception rather than compromise his vision. We can't wait to re-experience those effects on the big screen!

Reason 4: The practical effects

Yes, the CGI was amazing when the movie was first released - but it was actually used pretty sparingly by today's green-screen standards. Cameron had to work within the limits of 1991 technology, but happily, he knew how to deploy practical effects to thrill audiences and build suspense, and this film is no exception. Knowing that that is a real helicopter flying under a real bridge, and a real semi-truck barrelling down a real canal, somehow adds even more to the excitement of watching the action!

Reason 5: It's got heart

It's our firm belief that what elevates Cameron's movies is that, underneath the spectacle and action and suspense, there's always a beating heart. Terminator 2: Judgement Day is no exception. Sure, it's got loads of action and suspense, but it's ultimately a story about family and doing whatever you have to do to protect the ones you love. Oh, and saving humanity. Who wouldn't want to cheer for that happy ending?
