Top 5 Reasons to See Star Wars: The Last Jedi
It’s finally here! After months of waiting, Episode 8 in this beloved space opera, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is in theatres at last.
Ok, we’ll admit, we were always going to see this movie. One of the most highly anticipated sequels in a year that has seen more than its fair share of long-awaited movies, it’s likely the highlight of many fans’ moviegoing year. But just in case you’re somehow not convinced, here’s our top five (spoiler-free!) reasons to check out The Last Jedi in theatres.
No, really, it is. For a movie that goes to some pretty dark places (pun intended) while exploring what drives a person to the Dark Side, there's humour in it, too. Director Rian Johnson has leaned in to the wit in the original trilogy ("I love you." "I know.") and includes plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in his film. From deadpan asides to line deliveries to physical humour, there’s enough to make sure you leave the theatre with a smile on your face.
It wouldn’t be a Star Wars film without this first of two essential elements. Rest assured there are plenty of suspenseful, epic space battles as well as fights on the ground between heavily-armored First Order cruisers and other attack vehicles, and the relatively small, scrappy Resistance. To really get the full effect we recommend seeing the movie on the biggest screen possible, in IMAX or UltraAVX if you can!
The other crucial element to a successful Star Wars film is, of course, lightsaber duels. In addition to plenty of other riveting fights, training sequences, and long-awaited showdowns, we can promise you that The Last Jedi has amazing, balletic lightsaber scenes. The choreography in these is intricate enough that we’ll have to rewatch to fully appreciate every graceful last-second dodge and weave, parry and strike.
Kelly Marie Tran as Rose
Star Wars has given many young actors their first break into stardom and film immortality, and this time it’s Kelly Marie Tran. Just as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) brought a new life and a fresh perspective to an old franchise, her character injects a fresh sweetness and earnestness of spirit into the Resistance, and you’ll get flashbacks to Finn and Rey's first meeting when Rose and Finn must team up to carry out a mission together.
Carrie Fisher as Leia
Of course we have to acknowledge that part of what makes this movie a must-see is to watch Carrie Fisher portray Leia for the last time. The role that made her a breakout star in 1977’s original Star Wars (now called A New Hope) turned out to be her swan song, as she died tragically shortly after wrapping filming on The Last Jedi. For everyone who wished we could have had more Leia in The Force Awakens, her storyline in The Last Jedi will leave you feeling very satisfied, as this story is as much hers as it is Luke's.
Of course, there are plenty of other reasons to see The Last Jedi (porgs!) – these are just our top five. Watch the trailer below and click here for tickets and showtimes!
